Meet Dr. Eric D. Hansen
Ophthalmology
Dr. Eric Hansen is a board certified ophthalmologist who specializes in medical and surgical diseases of the retina, as well as ocular oncology. He grew up as a child near Healy, Alaska before his family relocated to Oklahoma. There he attended medical school at the University of Oklahoma, graduating summa cum laude. Dr Hansen completed his residency at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the perennial top-ranked eye hospital and ophthalmology residency in the country. He pursued fellowship training in International Ophthalmology with focus on global health health initiatives followed by a vitreoretinal fellowship at the Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City, UT. He then returned to Bascom Palmer to complete a third fellowship in Ocular Oncology. Dr Hansen joined the faculty at the University of Utah Moran Eye Center from 2020-2024 where he founded and directed the ocular oncology service and practiced vitreoretinal surgery, including the training of fellows and residents. He has been active in research, authoring publications in major ophthalmology journals and acting as investigator in clinical trials. He has published multiple book chapters on retinal disease and ophthalmic tumors, and has also been an invited speaker at national and international meetings.
Dr Hansen’s primary clinical and surgical interests include retinal detachments, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, dislocated intraocular lenses, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, as well as intraocular tumors and tumors of the ocular surface. He has maintained a passion for global health related ophthalmology with particular interest in promoting healthcare access and equity both locally and abroad. He collaborates with CureBlindness/Himalayan Cataract Project and other organizations to educate, train and build capacity with international partners.
Dr Hansen prioritizes a collaborative and patient-centered practice philosophy that relies on compassion and trust. He hopes to empower patients to actively participate in their healthcare and to promote open communication and coordination with a patient’s healthcare team.
Eric and his partner, Linda, are excited to relocate to the beautiful Pacific Northwest and join the Bellingham community. They enjoy mountain biking, adventuring on motorcycles, skiing, climbing and maximizing time in natural spaces. They also enjoy reading and live music - perhaps you’ll even find Linda playing at a local venue.
